Reasons You'll Love This Recipe

  • Plant-Based Ingredients: This recipe is vegan, vegetarian, and dairy-free which makes it a great breakfast choice for a number of dietary needs.
  • Gluten-Free: As long as you choose gluten-free ingredients, the basic ingredients are naturally free of gluten.
  • Easy Recipe: This recipe is a beginner level recipe and takes just five minutes to prep/make.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: These blackberry chia seed overnight oats last up to five days in the refrigerator.

Ingredient Notes

Five small white bowls filled with labeled ingredients including: blackberries, yogurt, chia seeds, oats, and oat milk.

Oats: This recipe uses rolled oats or old fashioned oats. I prefer to use classic rolled oats or old fashioned oats.

Quick oats are okay to use in this recipe. I would not use steel cut oats because they will need more liquid and will change the texture and consistency.

Yogurt: I prefer to use vanilla plant-based yogurt (coconut base). You can use any type of yogurt that you like as long as it has a vanilla, berry, or plain flavor.

Oat Milk: This will help make the oats nice and creamy.

Blackberries: You can use either fresh or frozen blackberries in these overnight oats.

See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for a full list of ingredients and quantities.

Top Tip: You can use more or less oat milk to create the perfect consistency. If you like your overnight oats thicker use slightly less milk. If you like them a little thinner use ¼ cup more milk.

Substitutions & Additions

Blackberries: You can use fresh blackberries instead of frozen if you prefer.

Milk substitutions: This recipe calls for oat milk but you can use any type of milk that you prefer. Other good substitutions would be almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk.

Add more berries: You can either add more blackberries or other berries such as blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries.

Mix in protein: If you are looking to add protein to this recipe you can mix in your favorite vanilla protein powder or nut butter.

Step by Step Instructions

A collage of four images labeled "step 1-step 4". Step 1: five small white bowls with ingredients in them. Step 2: layered ingredients in a jar. Step 3: the ingredients mixed together in the jar. Step 4: completed overnight oats.

Step 1: Collect and prepare all ingredients. Choose any substitutions or additions at this time.

Step 2: Combine all ingredients in a large container or jar. Stir everything together until well combined.

Step 3: Wait 2-3 minutes then stir everything again. Make sure to break up any clumps of chia seeds or oats that might have formed.

Step 4: Cover the oats and place them in the refrigerator for at least an hour or ideally overnight.

Expert Tips

Mix the ingredients well: We use chia seeds in this recipe which are notorious for clumping if not mixed well. I like to stir the ingredients immediately after combining them and again after 2-3 minutes.

Don't skip the yogurt: Using yogurt in your overnight oats will give you a much creamier consistency. Though it is possible to omit the yogurt if you don't have any (substitute with additional milk), they won't be as creamy.
