My favorite part of this recipe (aside from stating the obvious… donuts!) is that these donuts are baked! I have received so many compliments on these sweet treats, quickly followed by a question asking about how I fried them. Well the best news ever is that I didn’t, I used a nonstick donut pan and baked them! This is so much easier and slightly healthier but disclaimer: if you came here looking for a healthy donut recipe… this is not the one for you.
These are melt in your mouth donuts coated with sweet cinnamon sugar. They will have your friends and family coming back for more!
I baked these in a nonstick donut pan. My strong recommendation is to buy one that has 12 donut wells. If you find one you love that has only six donut wells… buy two! The first time I made this recipe (yielding 18 delicious donuts) I only had one- six donut pan. While this got the job done, I could have made more in a fraction of the time if I had a bigger tray.
Now onto the best part… let’s make some donuts!
Yields: 18 Donuts
To Make the Batter:
- 2 1/4 cup flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 6 Tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 Tbsp salt
- 3 large eggs
- 3 Tbsp melted butter
- 1 Tbsp vanilla
- 1 cup buttermilk
To Make the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
- 1/2 stick butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 Tbsp cinnamon
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl and set aside.
Mix wet ingredients together in a second bowl and set aside.
After both the dry ingredient bowl and wet ingredient bowl have both been mixed well, slowly add the wet ingredients into the dry bowl and gently mix using a whisk. It is VERY important to mix the batter gently JUST until it is all evenly mixed. You want to make sure the batter is not over mixed or over-handled.
Make sure your donut tray is well greased, even it if is nonstick. Next we will transfer our batter into a pastry bag or a plastic Ziploc bag. If using a Ziploc bag: once the bag is full remove any extra air, close the bag, and cut off one of the bottom corners of the bag. Evenly squeeze the batter into the donut pans!
Bake at 375 degrees for 10-11 minutes.
When full baked, remove from oven and immediately transfer from the baking tray to a cooling rack.
Once they have cooled, brush each donut with the melted butter and dip in the cinnamon sugar mixture until coated with perfection with sugary goodness – and enjoy!
