Reasons You'll Love This Recipe

  • Meal prep friendly: These mason jar salads are perfectly designed to stay fresh in your refrigerator for several days.
  • Vegan/plant-based: By using a plant-based Caesar salad dressing and cheese, these salads can easily be made vegan and dairy-free.
  • Easy to make: This is an easy beginner-level recipe.

Ingredient Notes

Labeled ingredients in small white bowls including: cucumbers, tomatoes, chickpeas, almonds, dressing, parmesan, pasta, and lettuce.

Dressing: You can choose a classic Caesar dressing or a plant-based option if you are making this vegan or dairy-free.

Pasta: I prefer a light but hearty pasta in this recipe. Bowties or spirals are both great options.

Lettuce: Classic, crunchy romaine lettuce works great in this recipe.

Cheese: Using a classic or plant-based parmesan cheese gives this salad extra flavor and texture.

Vegetables: Using a variety of tomatoes and cucumbers gives us extra flavor and freshness in this recipe.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and quantities.

Substitutions & Additions

Dressing & Cheese: If you want to make this recipe vegan, plant-based, and/or vegetarian, use a vegan Caesar dressing and cheese.

Nuts: You can make this salad nut-free by omitting the almonds.

Vegetables: Feel free to swap out any of the veggies for something you like better!

Top Tip: When making a mason jar salad make sure that you always add the dressing first so it sits at the bottom of the jar and your other ingredients don't get soggy.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Gather all of the ingredients and prep them according to the recipe card. Make the pasta and set it aside to cool.

Step 2: Pour the salad dressing into the jar first, followed by the cooked pasta.

Step 3: Continue to transfer prepped ingredients into the jar in layers with the washed and chopped lettuce at the top of the jar.

Step 4: Cover the jar/container and place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve the salad.

Expert Tips

  • Arrange layers strategically: Make sure when you are creating your mason jar salad that you place the dressing on the bottom, followed by the cooked pasta. The lettuce should always be place at the very top of the jar.
  • Dry the salad greens: Make sure to pat the lettuce dry really well before storing it in the jars to help avoid a soggy lettuce situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should you meal prep salads in mason jars?

Meal prepping salads in large jars is perfect for keeping ingredients separated without having to use excessive or fancy storage containers. Everything fits into the same container by utilizing layering!

Does it matter what order the ingredients are layered in?

Yes! When you make a mason jar salad it's important to always have the dressing go into the container first, followed by an item that can sit in the dressing without compromising the texture of that item. Beans or chickpeas are a great option to go into the dressing, I also find that tomatoes, cucumbers, or pasta (if it's a creamy dressing) all do well in that position. This lettuce should almost always sit at or near the top of the jar.

How to Serve

When you are ready to eat the Caesar salad mason jars you have two options.

Option 1: You can leave a little empty space in the jars which will allow you to shake the salad up right in the jar when you're ready to eat it. This is great if you are traveling with the salad or working with less space.

Option 2: Pour the contents of the jar out into a serving bowl and toss everything like a regular salad.
