Reasons You'll Love This Recipe

  • Vegan/Vegetarian: This recipe is made without using animal products. It's perfect to serve to anyone with a vegan or vegetarian diet.
  • Easy to make Gluten-Free: This recipe contains soy sauce but you can easily swap it out for tamari sauce or coconut aminos to make this recipe fully gluten-free.
  • Great for Meal Prepping: Enjoy this recipe freshly made or prep it in advance.

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients for tofu satay in small white bowls.

Tofu: Extra firm tofu is the best choice for this recipe. Make sure to press the tofu for at least 30 minutes to get rid of any excess liquid before beginning the cooking process.

Marinade: The marinade for this peanut satay tofu is made using soy sauce, fresh lime juice, honey (can sub agave nectar to make this vegan), chili flakes in oil, fresh ginger, and garlic.

Peanut Sauce: The spicy peanut sauce for this recipe makes the entire dish come together!

The peanut sauce we use is made using peanut butter, soy sauce, honey, sriracha, sesame oil, ginger, and lime juice.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and quantities.

Substitutions & Additions

Honey: If you want to make this recipe fully vegan you can swap out the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar.

Less spicy: Not a fan of the heat? Omit the sriracha and chili flakes to bring the temperature down.

Spicier: If you want things spicier, just add more sriracha and/or chili flakes until you reach your ideal level of spice.

Step by Step Instructions

Four steps to make peanut tofu skewers.

Step 1: Gather all ingredients and decide on any substitutions at this time. Press the tofu for at least 20-30 minutes to remove any excess liquid.

Step 2: While you are waiting for the tofu to be pressed, mix together the ingredients for the peanut sauce and set it aside and do the same for the marinade.

Once the tofu is pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces and toss it in the marinade. Allow it to marinade for at least 5 minutes or longer if you have time.

Step 3: Pour the olive oil into a pan and turn to medium-low heat. Skewer the marinaded tofu and cook the skewers for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Step 4: Toss the fully cooked tofu skewers in the peanut sauce and serve warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make tofu satay in advance?

Yes, you can make this recipe in advance. You can either make the entire recipe in advance or prep certain portions of the recipe such as the sauces, marinades, and pressed tofu in advance. If you have the time, you can also marinade the tofu overnight to get extra flavor.

Do you serve this hot or cold?

This recipe is best enjoyed warm/hot. With that being said, you can also allow it to cool or room temperature or enjoy it cold the next day as leftovers if you prefer.

Expert Tips

  • Press the tofu: Pressing tofu helps to remove excess liquid and gives you a much better texture. It also allows the tofu to absorb the marinade better for better flavor! I recommend pressing the tofu for at least 30 minutes.
  • Marinade overnight: The longer the tofu marinades, the better flavor the entire dish will have. If you are able to take the time, marinade the tofu overnight after pressing it.
