Going Plant-Based & Tips for Getting Started

If you’re thinking about transitioning to a plant-based diet, this post is for you. I’ve put together some tips that helped me be successful while changing to a plant-based diet, and hope they can help you too!

Find your motivation!

Why do you want to follow a plant-based diet?

  • For the animals?
  • For the planet?
  • For your health?
  • All of the above?

Having a reason to start will give you constant motivation.

Do your research

If you are transitioning to a plant-based diet, it’s so important to do your research before getting started.

There might need to be new ways you incorporate certain nutrients into your diet, especially if you are eliminating all animal products. For example, you might need to start taking a daily multivitamin containing B12, a vitamin B12 supplement, or find foods that have been enriched with vitamin B12 (look in your nut milks and certain oatmeals!).

Another good example is iron. There are plenty of great plant-based sources of iron (lookin’ at you, dark leafy greens!), but if you are used to getting your iron from red meat for example, look for some great plant-based alternatives.

There are just a couple of examples, make sure you are doing all of the necessary research to ensure that your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs.

*Always talk with your healthcare provider before you start or stop taking any supplements. You should let them know that you are now eating a plant-based diet.

Go at your own pace

Starting the transition of any lifestyle change can be tough because we are creatures of habit. It’s really important that you go at your own pace and find what works best for you.

  • Maybe you’re ready to jump right in and fully commit right away- that’s great!
  • Maybe it’s more helpful for you to take it one meal, day, or week at a time- that’s also great!

Remember that this is YOUR journey and one size doesn’t always fit all.

Start with what you like, then get creative!

Do you really love chickpeas and broccoli? That’s awesome, start right there! Start your plant-based transition by eating the plant-based foods you know and love. It will make things go smoother and hopefully helps you feel less overwhelmed. If you start with too many new and unfamiliar foods it can be a bit overwhelming and might even be discouraging.

Ease into new foods, but know that once you’re ready to explore more new plant-based options- there are a TON of amazing foods out there!

Have fun and enjoy some beautiful, nutritious, plant-based food!
